Can you spot the similarities?

One Piece belongs to Eiichiro Oda
Fairy Tail belongs to Hiro Mashima

Edit: I know One Piece came before Fairy Tail and I know One Piece is the mold where Fairy Tail came from. I'm just pointing out the possibility of the writers of both mangas sharing some notes. So stop whining about "One Piece came before Fairy Tail"! :X

i believe that the one piece picture implies nothing. first off she has no crown so it shows that she is not some queen to luffy and with nami being luffys navigator of course she would be close by. just my opinion on the whole deal.

She's not a queen on this one; she's a princess. When you look back at Israel times as a kingdom, you'll see there was no such thing as a queen; there were only kings and One Piece being a shonen manga it makes sense Luffy gets to wear the royal symbol (Pirate King) because One Piece has no such thing as a pirate queen

Wrong again!

Hancock epithet is "Pirate Empress" (海賊女帝); while ancient Kings ruled by right, the Emperors that arrived later in history ruled by force; An Emperor didn’t have the right to become royalty, they just force their way to power. Besides her epithet does not reflect her “sovereign” status; her “sovereign” title is “Snake Princess” (蛇姫) which, if you’ve seen DBZ, should sound quite familiar fav.me/d783a0k

Luffy is trying to earn the right to become Pirate King (海賊王) not Pirate Emperor (海賊帝). And Just like Arthurian legends, the one who manages to get the treasure (probably something like Excalibur) earns the right to become “King”. This matches One Piece’s nature, since it’s a manga whose “romance” equals to “dreams” and “becoming legends”

And about Vivi, she already has a romantic interest in Alabasta (remember Kozha); besides ruling a country would mean Luffy would have to sacrifice his dream of absolute freedom for the sake of a new responsibility, taking care of Alabasta. The Pirate King does not rule any country at all, he rules the seas; and that’s Luffy’s goal

Who cares?! One Piece is definitly not the most celling manga just because Oda was "sharing some notes" with Mashima......
Stop blaming Oda for stealing just because you dont like One Piece.......I dont want to be offensive....but thats unfair!

Butthurt much? :XD: I never said he "stole", even if he did it under Mashima's influence (unlikely) he made clear that he had a better understanding of  Universal History and different cultures

To put it simple: Oda >>> Mashima

Not lately of course! It sounded like you would claim that. Maby just for me...because english is not my mothertounge!
But if you put a picture like this on the net you have to expect comments like mine.
But of corse you made it clear now! Maby you should write that in your description!

Oda drew some of the SH's riding on a dragon on volume 3. Oda had a dragon short story in 1995 that he's already made a part of One piece as of Thriller bark. The main character in that short story was Ryuuma, the very same Ryuuma Zoro defeated. Zoro does the same move as Ryuuma from the short story when Ryuuma cuts the dragons head off in the short story. If you're interested, the short story is called Monsters. The tournament is a tribute to DB, hence the Roshi reference. Lucy sounds like Roshi in Japanese. Dragons were also one of Ussop's lies when you see him and the other kids chasing a salamander and Ussop calling it a dragon. This was during the time Ussop is about to leave his island and begins to reminisce. Ussop also mentions aliens, a large goldfish, poop the size of an island, and something else. So far, everything Ussop has lied about has came true. This also isnt the first time villains have returned. Most of the villains in the first half came back during Marineford/ID. Thanks for reading.

You kinda missed all the colliseum references and Oda wonderful mix of both spanish bullfighting and gladiator battles. More than a tribute to DB this arc is a ingenious reference to Roman Hispania.

The proof of Oda being the smartest shonen writer ever, even better than Mashima

I saw one piece long long ago, and only heard of fairy tail quite recently. I'm glad I saw something like this so that I can mention that when I first heard of fairy tail, i saw it as a blatant copy of one piece. :) I don't know anything about it so I'm not gonna argue about it or anything but that's what first came to mind when I saw fairy tail, that's all. :)

no matter what you say you won't be able to convince me.. and you should know it.. i was just expressing my opinion and yes i have watched a couple of one piece episodes... but you shopuld know that every person has his/her own ideals so you just shouldn't even trouble yourself to discuss about such thing.. for me fairy tail is the best anime/manga i've ever watched/read... and for me it hasn't got anything similar to one piece... they say Mashima copied the drawing style but that too has become different.. :icongreatjobplz:

NO...
Introducing Dragons (a concept foreign to the One Piece manga you say)
Again NO

Dragons were introduced as far back as trhillerbark, when mentioning the legend of Wano Kuni and the legendary duels with the Samurais and Dragons.

If you wanna claim the turnament is borrowed, then it would be borrowed from Dragon Ball, since Oda himself has stated was one of his inspirations for One Piece. Even Luffy/Lucy does look like Roshi with his beard.

Also, there are several color spreads with Luffy wearing a crown and Nami nearby.

Oda does NOT NEED to borrow from Mashima, its usually the other way around.

Also I love Fairy Tail, but stop making this assumptions. Oda has his timelines and plots planed YEARS back, the tournament at dressrosa has been probably on his mind for years.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been quite busy

First, I know the Dragon slain by Ryuma was metioned, however it never played any important role nor he appeared in the manga (Not even a flashback or a silhouette was given to it). They never said that Samurais duel Dragons, Hogback said that Ryuma was a legend because he slain one. But if Samurai duel Dragons on a regular basis, Ryuma's feat means nothing at all

About the tournament: Mashima did a poorly research (or no research at all) since his coliseum battles AKA The Grand Magic Games are mostly based on the Olympic Games, but historically speaking the Olympics never happened in the Coliseum. But Oda did a better research since he included the Coliseum events: the gladiatorial survival battle and the water (surrounding the arena) infested by sharks is probably a reference to both the naumachiae made in the coliseum and the animals used to execute people.

As someone here said, This is like Oda saying to Mashima "This is how its suppose to be done son"

You're making a rather big assumption there when you claim "Mashima did a poorly research". Namely you're assuming that Mashima was basing the Tournament on the ancient olympic games, not the modern ones, which tend to have a stadium for ceremonies and any events that'll fit within them, and what won't takes place in the surrounding area. Likewise you ignore that the tournament has two halves, games and fights, and the fights would square nicely with being in a colosseum. The fights were also likely the only thing taking place in the ancient "dragon king festival", meaning a colosseum would be quite appropriate.

Whether or not that's a reliable source (I read it "somewhere", too), it doesn't mean that it's automatic that Mashima's inspiration came from Oda. If you look at the bigger picture, most of the popular shounen seem to have a lot of parallels and similarities that it even seems like they all inspired each other.

It's always funny that people forgot about Mashimas first Manga RAVE MASTER or RAVE for short.
In this story you can see a mermaid village in danger and people with similar powers that reminds me of the devil fruit users in One Piece. X)
If people want to compare the styles, the story or other stuff they should compare the first works of this people. :D

My GF got me to read/watch Fairy Tail, before that I didn't knew much about Hiro Mashima, but if his first work is so much like One Piece, I wouldn't be surprised (When I started reading FT I saw Natsu as a replica of Luffy)

Still, thank you for telling me. As soon as I find out more about Rave I'll make a One Piece/Rave comparison

I also saw Natsu as a replica of Luffy but then I also started to read RAVE.
It's also interesting how Mashima first draw his characters and how his skills evolved over the time.

If you want to read RAVE you can find it here: [link]

Also it's nice to see how many stuff from RAVE appeared in Fairy Tail. :D

I really REALLY don't think that Oda is trying to copy Mashima. It's really funny to think he did. xD

If anything, Oda got the idea for a Colosseum from Toriyama... I know it's not a "stadium" as you called it, but it's the same concept. Multiple people battling for a title/prize. He just got around to it later than Mashima. :3

And I surely hope that Oda doesn't do another time-skip so soon after the first one. It would be completely pointless, and would anger way too many fans. I trust him not to do so. x)

The Dragon Ball tournaments were meant to be fights to become the best, while the OP/FT coliseum battles have a deeper and emotional purporse:

FT - Natsu explained during chariot why they were fighting, to make up to the F-class guild members for their absence, and the Natsu Vs Sting & Rouge was revenge for Lucy

OP - Luffy already said that he would not let his brother's Devil Fruit to fall in the wrong hands. And we saw how Ace died and how it affected Luffy

But you're right, it's not imitation; You can also take it as Oda's message to Mashima: "This is how a Coliseum battle is supposed to be"

It's all still similar to me. Having a deeper meaning doesn't matter.

I still think he was inspired by Toriyama more than Mashima. But no matter, I'm sure there will be an interview someday of Oda explaining why he chose to do a Colosseum arc. There's just about an interview for explaining most things. I also doubt that Oda is trying to teach Mashima, though that would be cool.
It's all in opinion, really.

Don't misunderstand. D: I DO appreciate emotion in literature. Manga, books, and american comics have made me cry, laugh, scream, and show many other things in myself many MANY times.
I just don't think that emotion has anything to do with this subject.

BUT you may be right. Maybe I should reevaluate my opinion.
